Cathy Condon - Shining December 9th - 31st 2008
Footsteps Gallery presents a collection from Sunshine Coast Artist Cathy Condon. Sunshine Coast artist Cathy Condon’s work has been described as dream-like, emotion-charged and imbued with captivating energy. Condon’s artistic style imbues a striking use of otherworld and underwater imagery. She interprets the ethereal quality of the music by Jo Eshuys and lyrics by her father in oil, enamel and ink on plastic. The figurative and abstract paintings flow from the themes developed 32 years ago. Condon’s focus on the ethereal has been developed further for the Shining Exhibition, by transferring some of the original production from ‘Once Upon a Lightime’, a high school musical and presented at Gympie High School Great Hall in 1976, reel to reel 8mm film and splicing her images through the work. “This has been an emotional process honouring the depth of work Dad and Jo created together” “My work has an ethereal quality, so it’s a natural fit with the space age theme of the musical. It’s about the past and present coming together beyond time.” Cathy has further built-on these paintings by reproducing the originals and then printing the images onto high quality canvas, photographic paper and perspex. The qualities of enamel and oil are intensified and the work takes on a cinematic quality. Black plastic, concrete underlay provides the background for every painting. The powerful contrast between the shiny, black background and the colours is dramatic.
